I have not been very happy with Mother Nature lately. While we needed water after last year’s drought, I don’t think we needed quite so much quite so fast. Chicago has had rain almost every day for the past two weeks, and many of the neighborhoods had 5-7 inches of rain on Thursday alone. My parents’ house has flooded many times, and it is always a tiring, stressful process. My thoughts have definitely been with all the families trying to dry out their homes.
Despite all of that, or maybe ironically so, Monday is Earth Day – a day intended to celebrate and promote environmental protection. Too often we take for granted everything that we have. Unless we begin to take better care of our environment, I truly don’t know what our children, grandchildren and so forth will have. All of this made me think of a Native American proverb: “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors. We borrow it from our children.”
