There’s a little bit of something for everyone on this Fall Reading List!

12 Books for your Fall Reading List - Some are a little spooky, some are just fun. Some are romantic and some are about family. There is a little something that everyone will love, including Mindy Kaling! ! The Love NerdsNext week The Love Nerds will be on vacation. To be more precise, we will be on the free cruise I won through the spring essay contest that many of you helped me win by voting. Things have been crazier than ever, so this vacation is coming at the perfect time for us. It will be a week to relax, rest, reconnect, and READ!

One of our favorite aspects of vacation is time to read books. Lately, the only way I’ve been able to enjoy books is listening to audio books on Audible. It is perfect for driving back and forth between the city and my parents’ house in the burbs. I’m two books into The Magicians series and will be reading the 3rd book on the cruise, in addition to as many of these as I can!

What have you been reading lately? Is there something you are dying to read? If you need even more suggestions for your reading list, make sure to check out my Summer Reading List!

FALL READING LIST

2015 Fall Reading List

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

“I got my heart’s desire, and there my troubles began.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: Like everyone else, precocious high school senior Quentin Coldwater assumes that magic isn’t real, until he finds himself admitted to a very secretive and exclusive college of magic in upstate New York. There he indulges in joys of college-friendship, love, sex, and booze- and receives a rigorous education in modern sorcery. But magic doesn’t bring the happiness and adventure Quentin thought it would. After graduation, he and his friends stumble upon a secret that sets them on a remarkable journey that may just fulfill Quentin’s yearning. But their journey turns out to be darker and more dangerous than they’d imagined.

Why it’s on the list: This series is like Harry Potter goes to college mixed with Narnia. I am a sucker for fantasy stories, and this one definitely fits the bill. I have already listened to the first two on Audible and will be reading The Magician’s Land on the cruise!

2015 Fall Reading List

The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz

“Those who are really responsible for suffering in the world couldn’t care less. It’s the ones fighting for good who are consumed by remorse.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: In this adrenaline-charged thriller, genius-hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist face a dangerous new threat and must again join forces.

Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a trusted source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female super hacker – a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering.

Why it’s on the list: I read and loved the original trilogy, so I feel like reading this one is the natural next step. Plus, I find Lisbeth to be really compelling and a huge bad a**.

2015 Fall Reading List

The Martian by Andy Weir

“Yes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him & forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded & completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—& even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet.

Why it’s on the list: This is one Bryan got to first and loved it! While I have heard it can be a little slow at times, everyone I know who has read it, loved it. Since the movie just came out, I will be reading this on the cruise as well so we can go see it when we get back.

2015 Fall Reading List

The Sparrow Sisters by Ellen Herrick

“All stories are true, some of them actually happened.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: With echoes of the alchemy of Practical Magic, the lushness of Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, and the darkly joyful wickedness of the Witches of East End, Ellen Herrick’s debut novel spins an enchanting love story about a place where magic whispers just beneath the surface and almost anything is possible, if you aren’t afraid to listen

The Sparrow sisters are as tightly woven into the seaside New England town of Granite Point as the wild sweet peas that climb the stone walls along the harbor. Sorrel, Nettie and Patience are as colorful as the beach plums on the dunes and as mysterious as the fog that rolls into town at dusk

Why it’s on the list: When reading reviews for this book, people kept making connections back to Practical Magic, which I loved. This book is also on my list because I love stories with a touch of magic and stories that focus on family, especially sister, relationships.

2015 Fall Reading List

Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine

“You have ink in your blood, boy, and no help for it. Books will never be just a business to you.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: In an exhilarating new series, New York Times bestselling author Rachel Caine rewrites history, creating a dangerous world where the Great Library of Alexandria has survived the test of time.…

Ruthless and supremely powerful, the Great Library is now a presence in every major city, governing the flow of knowledge to the masses. Alchemy allows the Library to deliver the content of the greatest works of history instantly—but the personal ownership of books is expressly forbidden.

Jess Brightwell believes in the value of the Library, but the majority of his knowledge comes from illegal books obtained by his family, who are involved in the thriving black market. Jess has been sent to be his family’s spy, but his loyalties are tested in the final months of his training to enter the Library’s service.

Why it’s on the list: I find parallel world stories fascinating. The idea of if one thing changes, how is everything else impacted? The Great Library of Alexandria held so much informations and resources! Plus, as a book nerd, a book focused story will almost always pique by interest.

2015 Fall Reading List

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

“The finest of pleasures are always the unexpected ones.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called “Le Cirque des Reves,” and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

Why it’s on the list: I am not sure why this book hasn’t made it on the list sooner. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about it, and I know my bloggy bestie loved it! The story also felt really appropriate for Halloween time.

2015 Fall Reading List

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy

“How do you rid the Earth of humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker.

Why it’s on the list: I think Bryan will love this book as much as I do, which is always appealing for adding books to my reading list. I love when we can enjoy things together and have a mini book club. Plus, the movie comes out in January which makes this the perfect time to read it!

2015 Fall Reading List

The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon

“Madness is always a wonderful excuse, don’t you think? For doing terrible things to other people.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. The most mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behind her house just months after the tragic death of her daughter, Gertie. Now, in present day, nineteen-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara’s farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister, Fawn. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that suddenly proves perilous when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished without a trace. Searching for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea’s diary hidden beneath the floorboards of her mother’s bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked deeper into the mystery of Sara’s fate, she discovers that she’s not the only person who’s desperately looking for someone that they’ve lost. But she may be the only one who can stop history from repeating itself.

Why it’s on the list: This is another book that sounds a little spooky, making it perfect for fall. Mysteries is also one of my favorite book genres, something I get from my mom.

2015 Fall Reading List

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

“You’d be amazed how much research you can get done when you have no life whatsoever.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the  OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

Why it’s on the list: Bryan read this one before me, too. He has been wanting me to read it for awhile, so I am finally adding it to my list and making it happen. He is not the only one I know who loved it either!

2015 Fall Reading List

Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling

“I will leave you with one last piece of advice, which is: If you’ve got it, flaunt it. And if you don’t got it? Flaunt it. ’Cause what are we even doing here if we’re not flaunting it?”

Synopsis from Goodreads: In Why Not Me?, Kaling shares her ongoing journey to find contentment and excitement in her adult life, whether it’s falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in lonely places, attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behavior modification whatsoever, or most important, believing that you have a place in Hollywood when you’re constantly reminded that no one looks like you.

Why it’s on the list: I loved the first Mindy book, so how I can resist diving into this one, too? She has such an honest and humorous voice. Of all the celebrity books that I have read, I find myself resonating with her stories and perspective the most. Plus, I need a good laugh!

2015 Fall Reading List

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

“They say it’s good to let your grudges go, but I don’t know, I’m quite fond of my grudge. I tend it like a little pet.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads. A brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.

Why it’s on the list: I loved The Husband’s Secret, which was on my Summer Reading List, so I want to give this one a try, too. Fingers crossed it’s just as good!

2015 Fall Reading List

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

“Prejudice, a dirty word, and faith, a clean one, have something in common: they both begin where reason ends.”

Synopsis from Goodreads: Maycomb, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch–“Scout”–returns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise’s homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchmanperfectly captures a young woman, and a world, in a painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past–a journey that can be guided only by one’s conscience.

Why it’s on the list: I am so torn about this book and have heard mixed reviews, but I do feel compelled to read it. This might be because I’m almost obsessive about finishing out a book series or movie series. I just can’t say no to heading back to the characters I have loved so dearly. Have any of you read it yet? What did you think?
