Apple dessert recipes have always been my absolute favorite. You just don’t get much better than warm, rich baked apples flavored with cinnamon and cloves! While I love making my individual apple pies for holidays, I wanted to make something similar in flavor for Thanksgiving with an extra special presentation. Voila! Baked Apple Roses!
Making pastry roses is an easy process once you get used to the process. It took me a couple attempts to get my fingers to work correctly and get into a rhythm, but they’re definitely work the first attempts. Just look how pretty they are!
The key to making these baked apple roses is cutting really thin slices of apple. If your apples are too thick, they will crack them you roll them. The first attempt I was too impatient and slices the apples way to fast without thinking. Have a little patience while making thin slices or use a mandolin.
I will be honest with you all – mandolins scare me a little bit! I think I’ve seen one too many scary stories. However, they are super helpful and speed up recipe prep a lot, so having a mandolin with a guard and food holder is essential for me!
Whenever I make these apple roses, I always use my recipe for Homemade Apple Butter. My sister says it tastes like Cracker Barrel’s Apple Butter, which is the highest compliment she could give. The best part? You can easily make a batch in your crock pot!

Time to Start Baking these Tasty Apple Roses!
An apple rose pastry is definitely a statement piece for your holiday table! Apple Roses are gorgeous enough for Thanksgiving dessert or Christmas breakfast but easy enough to make anytime.
- 1 Large Apple (or 2 smaller apples)
- 1 Sheet of Puff Pastry thawed
- 1/2 Lemon - Juice
- 2 tablespoon Apple Butter
- Cinnamon and Ground Gloves (sprinkle to taste)
Slice your apple in half and then carefully cut the core out without breaking the apple. You want to keep the half of the apple in tact.
Slice your half apple pieces into thin strips of apple.
Place those apple slices in a microwavable bowl of water with juice of half a lemon. Microwave the apples for 4 minutes to soften. Then, drain the water out of the bowl.
Roll out your thawed puff pastry sheet slightly on a floured surface. Cut into 6 even long strips.
Spread a thin layer of apple butter onto each strip.
Starting on one end, place the apple strips onto the top half of the puff pastry strip, slightly staking the slices on top of each other as you work your way down. You want a little of the apple popping off the top of the pastry strip. When you get to the end, leave a little empty space on the pastry strip.
WARNING - the apple slices will be a little warm.
Sprinkle with a little cinnamon and ground cloves to taste.
NOTE: You could substitute nutmeg for cloves if you prefer.
Fold over the bottom half of the pastry strip on top of the apple slices.
Start at the side you started with and start rolling. When you get to the end, take the little bit of extra puff pastry and rub/press it into the outside of the pastry rose to create a slight seal.
Spray your muffin pan with a non-stick spray and then add your pastry rose.
Bake at 375 for 30 minutes.
Remove from pan and let cool on rack.
