SWEET AND SMOKEY HONEY BBQ CHICKEN WINGS SAUCE!

When I started on my mission to make new chicken wing sauces, I knew that a Honey BBQ sauce would need to make the list. It is one of my most ordered sauces when we are ordering take out.

What I didn’t expect is that this would become my favorite honey bbq chicken wings sauce! Seriously.

My husband was also super surprised by the end result. There is the subtle sweetness that comes from the honey, the smokiness from a good bbq sauce, and a tanginess from ground mustard.

The real star of this recipe though is the tiny addition of hot sauce.

Since I had it on hand from making my Honey Sriracha chicken wings sauce, I used Sriracha sauce.

Now, most people hear Sriracha sauce and instantly become scared about the heat. It’s hot.

However, in this case, the small amount is very subtle and provides just the right little spice that a chicken wing really should have in my opinion.

The test though is if my toddler could eat it and the answer is yes! The honey and bbq sauce dramatically out weight any true heat that the Sriracha sauce would provide so don’t worry!

Try it. It’s worth it!

HOW TO MAKE A HONEY BBQ CHICKEN WINGS SAUCE?

This sauce recipe is definitely one of the easier recipes. You need 4 ingredients, and it’s a dump and stir recipe only. No cutting. No chopping. No melting.

You will add the honey, the bbq sauce, the hot sauce and the ground mustard to a bowl and stir!

The Honey BBQ Chicken Wings sauce is now ready to be tossed with cooked chicken wings. Speaking of…

HOW TO COOK YOUR HONEY BBQ CHICKEN WINGS?

There are 5 ways to cook your chicken wings: oven, grill, instant pot, slow cooker, and air fryer.

I suggest picking the cooking method that is easiest and most convenient for you at the time. My answer definitely changes depending on the circumstance, like if I need to take them to a friend’s house, and season.

You can head over to my post on HOW TO COOK CHICKEN WINGS for all the details on cooking them any way you choose! I share all my tips and tricks over there.

This time around, I grilled my chicken wings because it’s summer and I prefer not heating up my kitchen at all. Plus, I was testing out wing sauce recipes for 4th of July where I will definitely be grilling them.

I prepped my grill by oiling the grates really well to prevent sticking and then cooked them over medium heat for about 20 minutes.

Do not over turn them on the grill because meat that has gotten a nice char doesn’t stick on the grate as much.

Cook with the lid closed and check at least every 5 minutes. Move pieces that are cooking too fast to a less hot spot on the grill. Remove chicken wings from the grill when they have reached 165 F internally.

HELPFUL ITEMS OF MAKING WINGS:

Meat Thermometer – No matter how you are cooking your chicken wings, I recommend using a meat thermometer. It will ensure you are properly cooking your chicken wings to 165 degrees F internally for safe consumption no matter what cooking method you choose.

This one is super reliable and easy to use. I’ve had it forever!

BBQ Grill Tools Set – If grilling, you definitely want a full set of utensils safe for the grill! My favorite tool in this set for cooking chicken wings is the tongs.

Tongs make it super easy to turn the wings as I usually try to cook the wings on all “four” sides.

Grill Cooking Spray – Use this or oil up your grate before lighting so your chicken wings don’t stick! I make sure my grill is well coated before cooking any sort of meat.

Notes

WHAT HOT SAUCE SHOULD I USE?

That is totally up to you. I choose to your Sriracha. It is a favorite of ours, and I always have it on hand.

WHERE DO I FIND SRIRACHA SAUCE?

Sriracha sauce is an Asian-style hot chili sauce. It can usually be found in the Asian section of your local grocery store.

WHAT IF THE RECIPE IS TOO SPICY FOR ME?

On the chance that the small addition of hot sauce makes it too hot, you can try one of two things:

  1. Reduce the amount of hot sauce or eliminate
  2. Try a different hot sauce. People tolerate different hot sauces differently, so switching it up might help.
