Mini Apple Pies Filled with Delicious Fall Flavors!
I have this thing about individual food servings. I find them irresistible.
They are easy to serve for parties which means I find myself enjoying my company more than serving them.
Because let’s be honest, who wants to spend the entire holiday party behind the kitchen counter? I want to be laughing with friends and enjoying the food I baked.
Mini pies are probably my favorite! As a non-cake fan, I would always prefer having pie to enjoy over most other desserts.
Plus, it’s so easy to make a large batch of mini pies with multiple flavors just by making smaller filling batches.
We celebrate Thanksgiving every other year with Bryan’s extended family, and I have made these mini apple pies as well as some mini cherry pies for multiple years now. They were a big hit!
{Side Note: Cherry is definitely Bryan’s favorite pie filling while mine is apple – or maybe Lemon Meringue.}
I have even made them for my own family Thanksgiving now as smaller desserts that last longer have become more popular with us. We’re getting older and not eating quite as many sweets as we used to.
So what I really love about making individual apple pies instead of one large one is that they both travel well for the holidays and they make really good leftovers after the fact.
I put mine in tupperware in the fridge, and they usually stay good for a week. We just pop ours into the microwave for about 10 to 15 seconds and serve alongside ice cream for warm, apple pie a la mode in no time!
HOW DO YOU MAKE MINI APPLE PIES
I like to make my filling first before creating my mini pie shells because I like for the apples to be able to sit in all the spices a little bit. So I start my chopping my apples and tossing in the spices and dry ingredients.
Then, while the apples sit, I prep my pie shells.
I do not have a homemade pie crust recipe that I love. I grew up on Pillsbury pie crusts from my mom and still use them. So you can choose to take the shortcut like I do or make your favorite homemade crust.
When you are ready, I lightly flour the counter and lay out a pie crust. I cut out circles between 3.5 and 4 inches in diameter for a traditional muffin pan. These act as the bottom crust.
To make removal easier, you can cut out squares of aluminum foil to put in first and then push in your bottom crust circles into your muffin pan spots.
Add your apple pie filling to each crust. Then top your mini apple pies with a pie crust lattice or other pie crust design you prefer.
HOW TO MAKE THE LATTICE TOP FOR THESE MINI APPLE PIES
There are two ways you can do this and I’ve honestly done both depending on how many pie crusts I have available to me or who I was making them for.
- Cut out strips of pie crust from the scraps of making your bottom crust circles and use these to make lattice work on your pies.
- Use full pie crusts to cut strips and create a full lattice work on the counter to cut smaller circles out of.
The first is usually a little less pretty as you have to deal with whatever pieces you have available. You can also only do a lattice work of sorts with this method.
The second takes more time and work but usually results in a much tighter, uniformed lattice work across all the individual apple pies.
To make this happen, I use a cutting board to create straight lines and cut thin strips across the entire pie crust. I then remove every other strip and use those to weave in and out and make a full pie lattice work.
Using a small biscuit cutter the size of the muffin pan slots, I cut out little circles and use a spatula to pick up the lattice work and move to the top of the apple pie.

Easy Mini Apple Pies
Mini apple pies are ideal for your holiday parties! Bake these individual apples pies in a muffin tin for an adorable holiday dessert. Plus, you can make them a day ahead for easy serving!!
Ingredients
- 3-4 medium apples chopped, (I used gala or honeycrisp)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 tablespoons of flour
- 2 tablespoons of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon Cloves
- 2-4 pie crusts (You can either use scraps to make the top of the pies or use extra pie crusts for a little prettier presentation)
Topping
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Peel, core and chop apples.
- In a large bowl mix together the apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. You want all the apple slices to be evenly coated.
- Unroll the pie crusts on a floured surface and cut out circles 3.5-4 inches in diameter. I used to use a drinking glass as a template and a pairing knife to cut nut now I have a round cookie cutter. Make sure to save the scraps for topping if you don't want to use a separate pie crust for the tops.
- Cut off little square pieces of aluminum foil and put them into each cup of the muffin pan. Doing this step will make getting your pies out of the pan easier.
- Push the pie crust circles into the muffin cups and fill each one with the apple mixture.
- Cut the left over pie crust scraps into strips and use them to make an easy "lattice" on top of the pies with 3-4 small strips. Or use the extra pie crusts to cut strips; when I do it this way, I remove every other strip I cut, and create a lattice on the counter with these strips. Then I use a small biscuit cutter the size of the muffin pan top to cut out the lattice circles and place on top. Gently press down edges on the sides.
- Sprinkle the pie tops with the sugar/cinnamon topping mixture.
- Bake the apple pies at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
