WHY AND HOW TO MUDDLE WATERMELON?

When I make watermelon Moscow mules, I like to rely on fresh watermelon for a lot of the taste and flavor because it is such an easy fruit to muddle.

So your first step will be muddling fresh cubes of watermelon in the bottom of the glass. This is easiest with an actual muddler from a bar set.

Muddling the watermelon will essentially squeeze out the fresh watermelon juice to be incorporated into the cocktail and break down the watermelon itself into the drink as well.

The result is a really fresh tasting watermelon cocktail you will love!

You can also increase the watermelon flavor by adding watermelon vodka if you find it in store.

WHY AND HOW TO SMACK MINT?

Muddling your mint with the watermelon will extract the oils from the mint leaf and therefore extract the flavor into your cocktail. The result is cooling and refreshing.

However, I also love getting the full aromatic benefit of the mint by adding a mint sprig to the top of the drink as a garnish as well. When adding as a garnish, I always smack my mint first.

Smacking the mint between your hands is doing something similar to the muddling process; it’s helping to release the oils from the mint so we can smell and taste it!

Adding the smacked mint to the top of this Mint Watermelon Moscow Mule will definitely give it an extra pop for your guests.

If you aren’t a huge fan of the mint flavor, you could avoid muddling the mint into the drink itself and just add as the garnish for the aroma and pretty pop of color!

HELPFUL ITEMS FOR MAKING RASPBERRY MOSCOW MULES:

While making Moscow mules doesn’t require a lot of special tools, I highly suggest having a basic bar set on hand with a jigger and muddler.

It is a LOT easier to muddle mint and watermelon with an actual muddler than a random kitchen item around the house.

Other than that, you might want to serve up your watermelon Moscow mules in the traditional copper mugs. They don’t necessarily keeping your drink colder than other glassware as originally believed but they are pretty!

Here are my suggestions:

HAND HAMMERED 100% COPPER MUGS: This is probably my favorite set because in addition to coming with 4 hand hammered copper mugs, it also includes matching straws and shot glass! They are strong, sturdy and beautiful! Plus it comes with a limited edition brass handle!

3 PIECE BAR SET: If you are going to make simple cocktails, this is my favorite bar set. It has a jigger, a muddler, and a trident cocktail stirrer. This last one means it has a mini “spoon” shape on one end like a traditional stirrer and a forked shape on the other.

LARGE BAR SET: If you are going to be getting into more sophisticated cocktail recipes, including anything that needs to be shaken or strained, than I suggest upgrading to the full bar set. I love having everything on hand. You never know when you want to try something new!

Notes

Using fresh watermelon in this watermelon Moscow mule makes the biggest impact in terms of using fresh fruit, especially when quickly muddled.

You can also use watermelon vodka instead of fresh watermelon or in addition for even stronger flavor.
