Here are the 11 new TV shows that I’m excited to check out this fall!

I am so excited that fall is here! It’s hands down my favorite season because it means cooler temperatures while still being able to enjoy the outdoors, the changing of the leaves, pumpkin spice everything, cozy sweaters, boots with jeans, this year baby Liam and, of course, new TV shows to watch! It should come as no surprise that The Love Nerds are big pop culture geeks and therefore can’t wait for new shows to premier.

I usually spend time checking out as many of the new tv shows to watch as possible and then narrow down which make it onto my must watch list for the year. There are always the front runners shows that I have to stay up to date on week by week, the shows that Bryan and I will watch together on a free night, the shows that I have on in the background as I do some work or other projects, and those shows that I only watch when there is nothing else to watch. Are you similar? Or am I just weird?

11 New TV Shows to Watch this Fall - From Gilmore Girls and new family dramas to court trials and time travel, there's something for everyone! | The Love Nerds

But enough chit chat, let’s get to the list! Here are the 11 new shows this fall that I am most excited to check out. If I left something off this list that you are excited about, please tell me so I can watch it. Seriously! I want to know if I am missing some awesome entertainment.

11 New Shows You Should be Watching this Fall | The Love NerdsThe Good Place (NBC)

Premieres: Sept. 22 at 8:30/7:30c

What’s It About: Kristen Bell is back! She plays a woman who dies and goes to heaven (aka the Good Place) but then realizes there has been a mix-up and they have her life confused with someone else. In fact, she was a fairly terrible person when she was alive. With the help of her soul mate who is trying to teach her to be a better person, she is trying to keep the mistake a secret from Michael (Ted Danson), the architect of her neighborhood in the Good Place so she can stay.

Why I’m excited: I will be honest – Kristen Bell is enough for me to watch a show. The concept is also fun and unique, so I’m looking forward to checking it out this weekend.

This is Us (NBC)

Premieres: Sept. 20 at 10/9c

What’s It About: This is Us is getting a lot of nods to Parenthood and I can see why. It has been awhile since we’ve had a poignant family drama to make us feel emotionally invested. This drama follows a few groups of people and their personal triumphs and struggles, connected by the fact that they were born on the same day. Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia – with amazing chemistry – lead the way as new parents.

Why I’m excited: I can’t help it but I am a sucker for a good family drama and have definitely been missing it since Parenthood. I’m also really excited for Mandy and Milo!

Marvel’s Luke Cage (Netflix)

Premieres: Sept. 30

What’s It About: The next phase of the Netflix’s Marvel Universe is here! We are moving from Hell’s Kitchen to Harlem for Luke Cage’s own series. In case you aren’t familiar with Luke Cage, he has unbreakable skin while being very emotionally bruised and first appeared in the Netflix universe on Jessica Jones. While taking place month after JJ, the show will supposedly cover how he got his powers as well. Luke finds himself embroiled in a civil war between the gangsters who run the Harlem neighborhood and he reluctantly realizes that only someone bulletproof can protect the innocents.

Why I’m excited: We are huge fans of Marvel and specifically the Netflix Marvel universe. They have done such a compelling job with their stories, offering dark and realistic portrayals of these larger than life characters.

The Designated Survivor (ABC)

Premieres: Sept. 21 at 10/9c

What’s It About: Kiefer Sutherland is back on TV, this time as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Tom Kirkman. He is suddenly given the biggest promotion in the country and becomes president after everyone above him is killed in a terrorist attack at the State of the Union. Kirkman will have to contend with unenthusiastic advisors, attackers, a huge learning curve, and his own teens.

Why I’m excited: While I am cautious that this will end up falling flat, the premise has a lot of potential. I’m actually surprised this premise hasn’t been used in a movie or tv show before (feel free to correct me if I have missed something). Plus, as I sit here re-watching The West Wing again, maybe I am just excited to have another show taking place in the White House. Side note – I’m also excited to have Maggie Q in this because she’s awesome!

11 New Shows You Should be Watching this Fall | The Love Nerds

Notorious (ABC)

Premieres: Sept. 22 at 8/7c

What’s It About: This show is inspired by the real-life drama between Larry King Live executive producer Wendy Walker and criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos. The show stars Piper Perabo as Julia, a cable news producer who is often torn between truth and ratings, and Daniel Sunjata as Jake, a multi-tasking attorney. These two are constantly in a back-and-forth exchange of snappy dialogue as they try to control the media, the justice system and each other.

Why I’m excited: Their chemistry is on point in the trailer, and I’m intrigued by the conversations that will emerge about the role of media in creating the story and headlines for major news events. Piper Perabo is a selling point for me, too.

Pitch (Fox)

Premieres: Sept. 22 at 9/8c

What’s It About: A Major League Baseball team breaks tradition when they hire a female pitcher. she takes the mound for the first time. Yup, the San Diego Padres’ new pitcher is a woman, Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury), who has a trick pitch up her sleeve, becomes pitcher for the San Diego Padres and has a ton of ceiling to break through in this boys club. There also seems to be more to the story, especially some struggles with her family.

Why I’m excited: I like shows that break boundaries, so this feminist is excited to see a show taking on a female character in the sports world. I also like Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Ali Larter who both co-star.

11 New Shows You Should be Watching this Fall | The Love Nerds

Timeless (NBC)

Premieres: Oct. 3 at 10/9c

What’s It About: Time travel. The simple answer is it’s about time travel. Timeless follows a heroic trio who are trying to chase down a suspected terrorist as he travels through time and attempts to undo it. The team is comprised of Lucy, the team’s historian; Wyatt, the muscle and a former soldier; and Rufus, the scientist.

Why I’m excited: The trailer has an incredibly epic feel that immediately drew me in. I am cautious about how well they will be able to sustain the story and the effects, but I will definitely be tuning in to see. And to be honest, I am a bit of a sucker for time travel and period pieces.

11 New Shows You Should be Watching this Fall | The Love Nerds

Westworld (HBO)

Premiers: October 2nd

What’s It About: I didn’t realize until I started looking into this show for this post that this is a remake of Michael Crichton’s 1973 pleasure-robot movie. It went through a lot to actually get to the screen but it’s finally here!

Westworld is set in a not-too-distant future where people can pay $40,000 per day for access to a Wild West theme park that is filled with lifelike robots. The human patrons have no rules; they can do whatever they want to the robots. The robots have no memories or cognitive understanding of the world outside the park. However, as Westworld opens, the facade is already cracking and the town’s “girl next door” is feeling early pangs of consciousness.

Why I’m excited: You have incredible technology, the wild west, compelling characters, lots of mystery, and Anthony Hopkins. Plus, it’s a fresh story for tv, and the graphics look incredible. I’m definitely excited to see where it goes.

11 New Shows You Should be Watching this Fall | The Love Nerds

Conviction (ABC)

Premieres: Oct. 3 at 10/9c

What’s It About: Hayley Atwell stars as Hayes Morrison, a brilliant lawyer and former first daughter who also makes lots of questionable life decisions. She gets blackmailed into running the Conviction Integrity Unit, where Hayes re-examines cases with her team where there’s a suspicion of wrongful conviction in hopes of setting things right.

Why I’m excited: Hayley Atwell. While I’m still a little sad about no more Peggy Carter, I am excited to see her showcased in a modern role. Coming off the heels of Serial and Making of a Murderer, this show is offering viewers something we are clearly interested in. Now just fingers crossed they do it well!

11 New Shows You Should be Watching this Fall | The Love Nerds

Bull (CBS)

Premieres: Sept. 20 at 9/8c

What’s It About: Tony DiNozzo is back! Oh wait, No. I mean Michael Weatherly is back on tv and starring as a psychologist who doubles as a jury selection consultant. This procedural is loosely based on the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw, but it is not a direct imitation of him. Him and his team use a combination of behavioral study and intuition as well as cutting-edge technology to help resolve legal cases.

Why I’m excited: I find the psychology of court cases and jury make up interesting, which is exactly what this show is offering. The trailer seems to reveal almost everything about the first episode, but it had me intrigued. Weatherly still seems to be bringing on the charm, and I’m excited that he finally gets his own show (though NCIS will never be the same without him!).

11 New Shows You Should be Watching this Fall | The Love Nerds

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (Netflix)

Premieres: Nov. 25

What’s It About: Ten years ago, Gilmore Girls ended but not the way its creator intended or the fans wanted. With Netflix, the show has continued to gain popularity with a whole new generation of binge watchers and now, we will finally get to learn the final four words that were intended to end the series. Lorelai, Rory and almost the entire cast has returned for four movie episodes based on the seasons of a year.

Why I’m excited: I watch the entire series at least once a year, so to say I am a GG fan is definitely an understatement. I watched it live on its very first episode and stayed a fan all these years. Cannot wait!
