Hi, I’m Jennie from Little Girl Designs, and I’m so excited to be a contributor here at The Love Nerds. I thought it would be fun to share an ocean-themed hoop art craft in honor of summer and my love for the ocean with you today.

Adorable and easy craft - Ocean Themed Hoop Art! | The Love Nerds Contributors

I grew up in a little town in Southern California and have so many happy memories of going to the beach for the day. The salty air, the sand beneath our feet, the breeze…I just love it. In my home, one of the bathrooms has an ocean theme. It just sort of happened–I put up a photo of the coast and then added some shells to the counter, and slowly but surely, the theme emerged.

It seemed only fitting to add an ocean-themed hoop art craft to that bathroom, and that’s how this craft came to be. I’ve been making simple embroidery projects for years and love how fast they come together. For this craft, you don’t even need to have painting skills. It is easy enough for kids to make and customizable to whatever colors and words you want. And p.s., this hoop art also makes a great gift.

How to Make Ocean-themed Hoop Art

You will need:

Small hoop (the one pictured is 4 inches)
One small square of muslin fabric (mine was about 8×8 inches)
Fabric paint in complimentary colors
Embroidery floss in complimentary colors
Embroidery transfer pen or pencil
Embroidery needle
Hot glue gun and glue

  • If you would like to paint the hoop, I recommend doing that first and letting the hoop dry completely. I decided to paint mine with watered-down fabric paint for a soft wash and like how it turned out.
  • Place the fabric into the hoop. Squirt a few drops of fabric paint onto a ceramic tray or plate. Dip your brush into water and then swirl it into the paint. I started with the turquoise paint and then moved on to each color separately.
  • Paint the fabric, being careful to not touch the hoop. This is where it gets fun. You can experiment by adding a lot of water to the paint for a watercolor effect or dot paint straight onto the fabric (let your inner Monet come out! :)) The point is to cover the fabric with paint. Once you achieve the effect you like, set the hoop art aside to dry.
  • Using your transfer pen, write the word, “Ocean” onto the fabric.
  • Thread the embroidery needle with floss and back stitch along the letters you drew. By using all six strands of the embroidery floss, you won’t see the transfer pen outline once you’re finished.
  • Cut the leftover edges of the fabric down so you only have about one inch of fabric left. Using a hot glue gun, glue the fabric inside the back of the hoop.

Now your ocean-themed hoop art is finished! It would be fun to make several of these small pieces of artwork to make a gallery, don’t you think?
