Have Fun with the Kids this Holiday Season by Making a Batch of Reindeer Chow!
We are big fans of puppy chow recipes in this house! They are fun to customize for the season and event, quick to pull together, and easy to make even with a toddler grabbing onto your leg. Those are all big wins for me when looking for a holiday dessert to make for a family get together or party. Plus, kids and adults alike always dig in!
The Bunny Chow I make for an Easter treat is a big hit on the blog every year, and I thought bunnies shouldn’t get all the attention. Time to make festive muddy buddies for the reindeers!
So forget putting out the carrots on Christmas Eve, this is what the reindeers (and parents) really want to eat!
MAKING A COLORFUL CHRISTMAS PUPPY CHOW:
I kept this Christmas puppy chow recipe very simple so it was something that everyone could love and hopefully eat! So first thing you’ll notice is that there is no peanut butter used in this puppy chow recipe because we have nut allergies in my family. I also try to avoid nuts when making a dessert to bring to a holiday party.
You could try adding peanut butter in for a more traditional puppy chow, but I’m not sure how it would look or interact with the candy melts.
This puppy chow is far prettier in person than in these photos. The red, green and white really do pop and add a fun holiday look to this treat. To really make sure the color stood out, I doubled the amount of red candy melts and green candy melts than I would normally use making a colored puppy chow. The color is really rich and pretty!
Lastly, I decided to just add holiday m&ms. Look for ideas of what else you could add? Consider pretzel sticks (maybe with extra chocolate and candy melt drizzle), chocolate chips, or reindeer sprinkles.
HELPFUL ITEMS FOR MAKING THIS CHRISTMAS PUPPY CHOW RECIPE:
In terms of kitchen items, having Parchment Paper, a Large Mixing Bowl, Ziploc Bags, and a Large Spatula are all musts! The “Spoonula” in this spatula set is definitely my favorite for making puppy chow. I feel like it’s the best of both worlds as it does a good job of tossing the Chex Mix and scraping the sides as needed.
Other than the Chex Mix and powdered sugar, you will need Red and Green Candy Melts and for the white your choice of Vanilla Almond Bark, White Candy Wafers or White Chocolate Melting Wafers.
Wilton even has a fun holiday decorating kit with sprinkles and red and green melts; it’s perfect for this recipe but also for making Rolo Pretzel treats or even adding a fun touch to Oreos or pretzels!

Let’s Celebrate with this Festive Christmas Puppy Chow!
Reindeer Chow {aka Festive Christmas Puppy Chow}
Let's not leave the reindeers out this holiday season by making them their own special Reindeer Chow {aka Christmas Puppy Chow}! This holiday party mix recipe is filled with festive white, red, and green to celebrate the season!!
Ingredients
- 9 cups Chex Mix, divided into 3 sections
- 1/2 cup Melting White Chocolate, Vanilla Almond Bark or White Candy Melts
- 1 cup Powdered Sugar, divided into 3 sections
- 1 cup Green Candy Melts
- 1 cup Red Candy Melts
- 1 cup Red and Green M&Ms
Instructions
- In a medium microwavable bowl, microwave white chocolate or vanilla almond bark in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until completely melted.
- Pour over Chex Mix and toss until evenly coated.
- Add powdered sugar to a zip lock bag and add the Chex Mix to the bag. Seal and gently toss and shake until fully covered.
- Lay out on parchment paper to cool and set.
- Repeat for other two color batches, using the green and red candy melts respectively instead of the white chocolate.
- Add Christmas M&Ms or other festive candy of choice.
