I don’t know if it’s a pregnancy craving or what, but I have been loving peppermint desserts this holiday season. As a family, peppermint recipes have never had a major roll in our holiday menu, but they should. Therefore, I’ve made it a mission to make more peppermint desserts, including these White Chocolate Peppermint Pretzel Rods.

Peppermint – or even more broadly mint – tends to get a bad name. People assume that the mint flavor will be too strong or overpowering, like chewing on a breath mint for dessert. However, good desserts using mint add in subtle flavor that balances with the chocolate or other flavors.

So my great peppermint dessert pursuit began with my Peppermint Puppy Chow, to which I became an addict. I used peppermint melting chips added to the white chocolate and some crushed candy cane, and the results were pretty amazing. I thought why not try it with pretzels?

The result? A peppermint chocolate pretzel stick that even my non-peppermint loving family liked!

With the short prep time and short list of ingredients to make this Christmas candy, you should definitely give it a try! They make a very pretty addition to the holiday table or Christmas treat drop-offs.

WHAT CHOCOLATE SHOULD I USE FOR PEPPERMINT CHOCOLATE PRETZEL STICKS

You will need to choose which chocolate you want to use for these chocolate pretzel sticks. I prefer white chocolate because it’s a personal favorite of mine and I think it looks more festive with crushed candy cane.

White chocolate is more difficult to melt, however, than bittersweet or milk chocolate because it usually made with cocoa butter. It can easily turn lumpy when melting or scorch easily. So here are some tips and suggestions:

First, Your best choices for melting when it comes to a “white chocolate” pretzel rod is White Chocolate Melting WafersCandy Wafers, or Vanilla Almond Bark. The flavors will all be a little different but fairly similar; you wouldn’t be sacrificing anything significant flavor wise, and I find that most people just have a preference one way or another.

Second, If you are set on trying white chocolate chips because they are more economical or you’re just desperate (I’ve been there), you will want to turn the temperature down low on the microwave and heat at no more than 30 seconds at a time. I find that adding a tiny amount of vegetable oil after melting helps keep the chocolate thinner and smoother for dipping the pretzel rods.

If using milk chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, or dark chocolate, your choices are simpler. You can buy melting bars or even use chocolate chips as they melt easier than white chocolate. If melting in the microwave, melt in 30 second increments making sure not to over cook or burn.

HOW TO MAKE WHITE PEPPERMINT PRETZEL STICKS

In a medium microwavable bowl, microwave white chocolate or vanilla almond bark (or whatever chocolate you have chosen) with the peppermint baking chips in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until completely melted.

I use 1 cup of white chocolate and 1/3 cup of peppermint baking chips which I think results in a subtle but flavorful touch of peppermint. If you want stronger peppermint flavor, add more peppermint baking chips to change the balance.

HELPFUL KITCHEN TOOLS FOR MAKING THIS CHRISTMAS CANDY RECIPE:

To make clean up easier, you will definitely want to use either parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Microwave safe bowls for melting your chocolate. I like my lightweight nesting bowls for this or my glass nesting bowls.

You will also need Crushed Candy Cane, but you can also use holiday sprinkles if you would prefer not to add more peppermint like these Christmas Sprinkles.

WHITE CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINT PRETZEL RODS

Yield: 20 pretzel rods
Prep Time: 20 minutes
COOLING TIME: 15 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes

White Chocolate Peppermint Pretzel Rods are the Christmas candy recipe you didn't know you needed, but you do! Add the perfect touch of peppermint to a classic white chocolate pretzel treat.

Ingredients

  • 20 Pretzel Rods
  • 1 cup Melting White Chocolate or Vanilla Almond Bark if preferred
  • 1/3 cup Peppermint Baking Chips, you can increase ratio toward more peppermint if you want stronger flavor
  • 1/4 cup crushed candy cane

Instructions

  1. Prep baking sheet with parchment paper for easier clean up.
  2. In a medium microwavable bowl, microwave white chocolate or vanilla almond bark with the peppermint baking chips in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until completely melted.
  3. Dip your pretzel rods into melted chocolate. As you pull the rod out of the chocolate, twist the pretzel until no longer dripping, leaving an even chocolate coating.
  4. Immediately dust the chocolate-coated pretzel rod with crushed peppermint. You do not want the chocolate to set before dusting so that the crushed candy cane will stick.
  5. Place finished pretzel stick on parchment paper covered baking sheet. Repeat until done.
  6. Chocolate will set in about 30 minutes at room temperature. If you would like to speed up the process, place in fridge; chocolate will be set in closer to 10 minutes.
