Fun and colorful Inside Out Party Ideas because everyone loves a good Disney Party!

Fun and colorful Inside Out Party! Ideas! Celebrate your feelings and your Disney Side with this birthday party! | The Love Nerds

Here is something your probably don’t know about me. I love throwing parties. So much so that I really thought about putting my Type-A skills and my creativity to work as a party planner. In the 8th grade we had to complete a job report – take the skills/job test, do research, and even interview someone in the field. Mine was on being a wedding planner. So when I say that I have thought about becoming a party planner, I mean I’ve been doing so for over 16 years of my life. And who knows, maybe I still will.

In the meantime though, I get to use this blog as an outlet for these party planner wishes. For awhile, I held off. Partly because of logistics – I have no space in my apartment to set up a party where the pictures would look good because of our stained glass windows. Partly because of fear – what if you all laughed at me never to come back again?

Then, I decided I loved it too much, so I’m finding ways to incorporate parties into the blog and I hope you love it! I shared the Shark Party in July and now I’m sharing this colorful Inside Out party! Then, next month? Cinderella!

But that’s enough chatter! Let’s get to the Inside Out party!

TABLE and BACKDROP

Inside Out is full of fabulously bright colors, so I wanted to focus on that for creating the tablescape. For the table itself, I spread out my main color (yellow for Joy) on the whole table and then put runners of the other four colors down on top of that. For the backdrop though, I wanted something that would stand out.

The entire backdrop is paper chains made from the 5 colors of the main characters and emotions – yellow for Joy, blue for Sadness, green for Disgust, red for Anger, and purple for Fear. I went with paper chains because all of them together reminded me of the walls upon walls of memory balls in the movie. Plus, while it takes some times, it is economical for the big punch it offers.

  • Our backdrop was 20 chains across and 25 links down. Each strip was cut at 1.5″.
  • Since I wanted it to be sturdy and hold up to the heat outside, I used staples to make my chains. When I hung it up, my niece and I just spent a couple minutes turning some of the rings to keep the staples from being front and center. That desire comes from the Type A part of my brain.
  • We strung up all the chains on bakers twine and used heavy duty tape to hang the string, putting tape in the middle too to help with the weight. If you could, I recommend stringing on a cheap curtain rod and hanging that up as you wouldn’t need to worry about the weight bowing in the middle as you would with string.

PARTY DECORATIONS

I was so memorized by the walls and rows of memory balls in the movie that I also wanted to replicate it in other areas of the party decor. I stocked up on gum balls in the five colors and purchased two inexpensive plastic cylinder containers from the party store to make the two pillars of memories. They look so cool in person! To save money on gum balls, find something to put in the middle and take up space. I used a cup with tissue paper in the middle and then dropped the gum balls in between the cup and the container to fill it up.

While I don’t think you need character plates or other party ware for a themed party, I really wanted to have the Inside Out characters present on the table. I picked up these small figures of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust. What I loved about these is that they could stand on their own (except for Disgust who needed a little help) and they came with their own memory balls. I gave each of them their own quote that I made inspired by the movie and the items on the table, attaching them with these awesome paper straws from Sprinkled Joy and tape.

CUPCAKE TOPPERS

I decided on cupcakes for this party with icing in 5 different colors. I picked them up from a local grocery store – a dozen for $7. It was easy and a good price in my opinion, but I didn’t want to leave them plain. I picked up sprinkles in the right color and then made my own cupcake toppers in less than 10 minutes.

To make the toppers, I used poster photos and cropped them round close to the character. {They are for personal, individual use only.} I printed and cut them out. Then, I cut the straws from Sprinkled Joy in half and attached the paper circles to the straws with tape. Ta-Da! I absolutely love how they turned out.

FOOD AND DRINK

When brainstorming what to make for the party, my niece flipped the light switch for me when she said, “broccoli pizza.” Now, the San Fransisco Broccoli Pizza shown in the movie grosses me out but it did make me think about this fresh veggie pizza appetizer my family likes. We thought long and hard about which veggies to include this time around, focusing on Inside Out colors. The only one we couldn’t find is a blue veggie! Head over to the post for this Cream Cheese and Dill Veggie Pizza for the full recipe.

For the punch, I went with purple. I took a 1 packet of grape Kool Aid, 1 liter of Sprite and and about a 1/2 liter of Lemonade. Adjust as needed.

ACTIVITIES

As a fun activity for the kids, I decided to let them make DIY Candy Necklaces! It was a favorite activity of mine when I was a kid, so it was time to bring it to the new generation. Head over to yesterday’s post to see all the details, including which candy I used.
