How to Make Temporary Tattoos at Home for Divergent, Birthdays or anything else you love!

How to Make Temporary Tattoos at home! I'm sharing my DIY Divergent Temporary Tattoos that would make Four proud but you can use this process for anything! | The Love NerdsI love classic literature, but my heart belongs to young adult lit. It’s a weakness of mine.  I love diving into their worlds to see what is going to happen next. Where are all the horcruxes? Will they get out of the maze? Who will survive the games? What reckless thing will Tris do next? Will her and Four live happily ever after?

Since the Insurgent DVD is coming out today (the second book/movie in the Divergent series), I thought I would mark the occasion with a fun new craft and show you how to make temporary tattoos for Divergent or anything that fits your fancy. Truly though, who doesn’t love a good Divergent craft?

I am loving these DIY homemade tattoos! The Silhouette Temporary Tattoo Paper from Silhouette America is easy to use and you don’t need a Silhouette to use it. That’s right! You can make this craft even if you do not have the machine. You do need scissors though.

Each packet comes with two white, glossy sheets of paper that’s similar to photo paper and two green-tinted sheets of adhesive. Since there are only two sheets of tattoo paper in each kit, I recommend getting the most out of each sheet. Since I was making these tattoos for only a few of us to give this paper a try, I did not necessarily fill up the paper. If I was making for a party, I would most likely have things in more organized rows with repeated images.

DIRECTIONS

Start out by deciding which images you want to print on the sheet. I have provided a JPEG of the Divergent Tattoos that I used. When laying them out, try to make the most use of your paper while staying within the margins.

When ready, print the design on the glossy side of the temporary tattoo paper using the PHOTO PAPER option on your printer. I always do a test print first to make sure it’s within margins correctly AND that I know which way I need to add my tattoo paper into the feeder. Let it sit and dry before doing the next step.

Once the ink is dry, take a sheet of the green tinted adhesive sheet and peel the thin backing strip off from the top. Line up the adhesive on top of your glossy printed sheet. Peel off the rest of the backing and carefully lay down the rest of the adhesive on top of your printed tattoos. I like to use one hand to hop up the adhesive and the other hand to slowly slide the adhesive down. Use a scraper to eliminate any bubbles and make sure the adhesive adheres to the tattoos.

After each image is transferred, you can use scissors to cut them out. You want to cut close to the design as possible to avoid a lot of extra “shiny” look beyond the tattoo once applied. (See note below if you want to use the Silhouette to cut out your design instead of scissors.)

TIME TO APPLY YOUR TATTOO! Remove the adhesive plastic and place the paper on your skin. With a very damp washcloth or paper towel, wet the design for at least 10 seconds. Carefully remove the paper backing and be ready to amaze everyone with your new tat!

NOTE: if you want to use the Silhouette to cut out your tattoos, you will need to set registration marks before printing and then add to the cutting mat at this stage to cut. There are more detailed instructions of how to do this with the material and online. If I was doing all the same design, setting registration marks would have been awesome. I didn’t want to take the time to create them for each of these individual designs.

NOTE 2: Please keep in mind copyright laws. There are plenty of places online with free images to use or with images for purchase. I do not recommend this project for selling either. It is for personal use only

These were a lot of fun to play with and I am super lucky to have a husband and friends who are willing to participate in the experiment! That’s Bryan in the middle with two of our closest friends! Bryan was pretty excited to wear the Four tattoo on his forearm.
