Meet Liam with his adorable Harry Potter Newborn Photos!
If you follow along with us here or on social media, you know that 2016 was the most difficult year. We’ve had hospitalizations, job losses, a NICU stay, and the death of three family members, including my mother. Then, while I normally keep my feelings private about politics, this week has been a disappointment and filled with fears and concerns from so many friends.
2016 has been overshadowed by darkness, and I find myself turning to Harry Potter as I often do when things are hard. Yes – I am very nerdy and slightly childish. But I keep going back to this quote by Albus Dumbledore:
Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.
Meet our light of 2016 – Liam! He was born on October 4th, so we are quickly approaching the 6 week mark. His arrival was not exactly smooth sailing. About 4 hours into delivery, he went into distress. I had to shift positions quickly, get a shot of medicine, and go on oxygen. He quickly rebounded, but we remained concerned throughout the delivery with the knowledge that we might have to undergo an emergency c-section at any time. Upon his arrival, he struggled to breathe and with just a quick glance across the room, he was rushed to the NICU with Bryan at his side.
All the NICU moms out there will understand how difficult that was. You have this vision of the arrival of your baby and that was not it. I remained in the delivery room, holding the hand of the kind nurse standing next to me and trying to remain calm. Him getting the help he needed mattered more than my desire to hold him or to have Bryan by my side, but it hurt and was scary.
With limited opportunities to hold him in the NICU and growing concern that I would have to leave the hospital without him, we got the best news possible. On our 3rd day in the hospital, we left together as a family at 10 o’clock at night.
As always, it is hard to imagine how quickly time goes by. We were so worried about his ability to breathe and then to eat enough to be able to go home with us, and now we are approaching 6 weeks. He is healthy and thriving. He is sweet, beautiful and the best snuggler!
